Variety in Supernovae

چکیده
Detailed observations of a growing number of supernovae have determined a bloom of new peculiar events. In this paper we take a short tour through the SN diversity and discuss some important, physical issues related to it. Because of the role of SN Ia in determining the cosmological parameters, it is crucial to understand the physical origin of even subtle, observed differences. An important issue is also the reddening correction. We belive that the measure of interstellar lines on medium resolution spectra of SNe can be used to derive lower limits on the interstellar extinction. A few physical parameters of the progenitor, namely radius, mass, density structure and angular momentum, may explain most of the diversity of core-collapse events. In addition, if the ejecta expand into a dense circumstellar medium the ejecta-CSM interaction may dominate the observed outcome and provide a mean to probe the mass loss history of the SN progenitor in the last stages of its evolution.

Systematically Bridging the Gap Between Novae and Supernovae
The venerable study of cosmic explosions is over a century old. However, until recently, there has existed a glaring six-magnitude luminosity gap between the brightest novae and faintest supernovae. To find optical transients that are fainter, faster, and rarer than supernovae, we designed a systematic search: the Palomar Transient Factory. Theorists predict a variety of mechanisms to produce t...
متن کاملDust in the Early Universe : Dust Formation in the Ejecta of Population III Supernovae
Dust grains play a crucial role on formation and evolution history of stars and galaxies in the early universe. We investigate the formation of dust grains in the ejecta of population III supernovae including pair–instability supernovae which are expected to occur in the early universe, applying a theory of non–steady state nucleation and grain growth. Dust formation calculations are performed ...
متن کامل8 Thermonuclear Supernovae
The application of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) as distance indicators in cosmology calls for a sound understanding of these objects. Recent years have seen a brisk development of astrophysical models which explain SNe Ia as thermonuclear explosions of white dwarf stars. While the evolution of the progenitor is still uncertain, the explosion mechanism certainly involves the propagation of a ther...
متن کاملThe Impact of Supernovae of Type Ia on Large Scales through the Secular Evolution of their Rate
A straightforward formalism to evaluate the impact of Type Ia Supernovae (SNIa) on large scale astrophysical issues is presented, together with analytical formulations for the SNIa rate following an instantaneous burst of Star Formation (SF), for the variety of SNIa progenitors. Some applications of the parametrized formalism are illustrated. The observations seem to favour the Double Degenerat...
متن کاملReview on the Observed and Physical Properties of Core Collapse Supernovae
Core collapse supernovae prove to comprise the most common general class of exploding star in the Universe and they come in a great variety of flavors. The wide range of luminosities, expansion velocities, and chemical abundances displayed by these objects is evidence for large variations in explosion energy and in the properties of their progenitors. This paper summarizes observed and physical...
متن کاملAnalytic Approach to the Stability of Standing Accretion Shocks: Application to Core-Collapse Supernovae
We explore an analytic model of the accretion shock in the post bounce phase of a core-collapse supernova explosion. We find growing oscillations of the shock in the l = 1 and l = 2 modes, in agreement with a variety of existing numerical simulations. For modest values of the ratio of the outer accretion shock to that of the inner boundary to the shocked flow, the instability appears to derive ...
